Literary Experience

Literature can be expressed in several ways as Professor Corrigan mentioned. My first literary experience was not the usual bedtime story. Rather, my mother would sing me to sleep with a lullaby she wrote for me and my sister. It used the letters of the alphabet, however had personal touches along the way. For example, "N is for Ninety; the year that we came."

My favorite books growing up was the "Nate the Great" series. That series sparked my interest in reading, which continually grows daily.

I never appreciated literature until i understood the literary devices like irony, metaphors, allegories, among others. The book i realized that reading and literature were more than entertainment was A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. Not that it wasn't entertaining, but there is so much more in literature that I realize. This book would have to be the most significant, because it changed my view so radically.

The beauty of literature is that the same text can be interpreted several different ways. My most recent memories include the rereading of Psalms. This is a prime example for the ambiguity of literature. Every time i read Psalms I get something new or applicable to my life yet the Psalms never change. This also seguays into the impact literature has on me. Literature changes my life perspective through quotes, pictures, books, paintings, movies, music.

  1. I'm glad to hear that your "interest in reading . . . continually grows daily." This is good news indeed. I also appreciate your appreciation for ambiguity. That's something that derails not a few people from literature.

I'd be interested in hearing more about how Dickens changed your view. I had a few texts do that.

  2. Oz, I'm enjoying following your blog. Although you've only posted once, i just know that I'm going to be an avid reader.

I completely agree with your stance on music. In my eyes lyrics put to a melody is one of the most moving things. I also love words that seem to be ambiguous and force you to look deeper into their meaning.

  3. Hey ozzie!!! I think that is really cute how your mom made you and your sister a lullaby! My dad also made up a song for me when I was born, and it is most definitely a song that will stick with me the rest of my life. Isn't it cool how such small things can make such a huge impact!

Also it amazes me how many times you can read a verse or a book of the bible and each time it can mean something different!

  4. Yeah that book showed me that a broken wine bottle meant more than the obvious broken wine bottle. rather, that wine also symbolized aristocracy of the French at the time, and the mob acting so desperate was to show the literal and metaphorical hunger and thirst.

and love love your talent is great, and i'm glad we share the same view on music.

Brooke, Im really amazed at the small things in life. lately, i've become complacent with the blessings of people and things in my life. so thank you for encouragement. and i'm interested in hearing your dads song someday.
